Hey Everyone!
Today’s Coast to Coast Street Style post features Karen Kane and is dedicated to female educators everywhere. With school back in session in most places now, Alina, Jessica and I thought it would be a great idea to showcase our back to school style! I think it goes without saying that being an educator is one of the most important jobs a person could have. The work that educators do everyday in the classroom helps to shape the minds of our children, a job I’m sure is not taken lightly. When it comes to dressing the part of an educator, I can imagine teachers and professors wanting to look mature and professional to ensure they are taken seriously by their students and coworkers. Does that mean you have to sacrifice your personal style? I don’t think so. As long as you follow a few simple rules, there’s no reason why you can’t be the most stylish teacher in school and still look like a professional. I didn’t always have the luxury of wearing jeans everyday. As a person who once worked in a business casual environment, I wanted to share some easy styling tips I came up with that will help you to look both professional AND trendy!
The following tips can be used in a variety of professional environments:
- Experiment with Basic Pieces – Always start by working with what you already have in your closet. Basic pieces like a black pencil skirt, white button down blouse and boyfriend blazer can be worn together. To add a little flair to the look, try wearing a pair of leopard print flats. Mastering the art of mixing and matching basic pieces can provide you with a variety of different looks.
- Have Fun with Color – Looking mature and professional doesn’t mean you have to wear muted colors or you won’t be taken seriously. As long as you don’t pop so much color that you look like a clown, have fun with it!
- Pack a Pair of Flats – Educators usually spend quite a bit of time on their feet throughout the day. If you elect to wear a cute pair of pumps with your outfit, don’t forget to pack a pair of comfortable flats you can change into at some point during your day. NOTE: The gold sandals I’m wearing in today’s post would more than likely NOT be acceptable in the classroom.
- Layer! Layer! Layer! – Layering is a trend that’s here to stay. It’s also a great way to stay on the modest side. Pairing your wide leg trousers with a cute printed top and cardigan is always a great look!
- Not Too Tight and Not Too Short – There’s no harm at all in wearing a pencil skirt or fitted dress providing you are mindful of just how “fitted” the skirt or dress are. Length is also very important. Keep the length of skirts and dresses at the knee or lower.

I love it and the simple jewelry. I have yet to wear my black pencil skirt to work, as I think it’s too fitted. I’ll have to revisit and throw on a longer blazer or cardigan to cover the rear 🙂

Thank you Mel!

I especially love the color and layering tips- just a little pop of cheery color or an extra collared blouse under a sweater can really move an outfit from “meh” to “oooh!” And I definitely agree with you about always bringing flats when wearing heels. There’s nothing worse than having to stay in uncomfy shoes!!

Hi Marlen! Thanks so much for visiting! Flats are a must! I can only stand in them for certain periods of time before my back starts to hurt.

Being a teacher does not mean giving up style! I know for a fact that I respected the teachers that had style more than those who didn’t! (shallow I know!)
Johnnalynn Lynch says
Hi Rachel! I agree with you 100%! LOL!

I’m actually considering updating my style to a bit more mature one, so I’m looking for ideas, and this post has it, thank you 😀 I need to get my hands on a few more blouses for sure. Why is it so hard to grow up lol
Johnnalynn Lynch says
Hi Orsi! Believe me, every year I get older and ask myself that same question. Lol! So glad you found some inspiration in my post. Business dress definitely doesn’t have to mean looking old 🙂
