Hey Everyone!
As a person who shops online more often than not, I occasionally run into the same issue with sizing. No matter how hard I try to study the size chart of the site I’m on, I sometimes end up ordering the wrong size. The reason why this happens is because brand sizing varies. My general rule of thumb is to have my own tape measure and be familiar with my measurements. I then use my measurements when viewing the sizing chart to ensure that I get the best fit possible. This strategy doesn’t always work though. The result is that I may end up with a dress or pants that’s a size too big. I typically don’t like to send things back through the mail. So when this happens to me, I either take the item to my tailor or live with it. There are ways to style a dress that is too big though. You don’t always have to send it back. The most important thing for you to decide is if you’re willing to live with it being the wrong size.
I’m a huge fan of Ann Taylor. One of the things I’ve noticed though is that their clothing tends to run bigger than most of the other sites I shop on. When I ordered the Tiered Lace Chambray Dress I’m wearing today, I got it in my normal size. Needless to say, when I tried it on it didn’t fit nearly as nice on me as it did on the model. Although it doesn’t look terrible, I was expecting the fit and flare effect that I saw online. Instead, the dress just goes straight up and down. So to give it some shape I added a fitted belt. Since I’m only 5’5, the dress also fits me longer than the model wearing it. Adding the belt took care of that too. I was able to shorten it by pulling the dress up over the belt a bit. This simple tactic saved me the $40 I would have had to pay my tailor. There are also other ways to style a dress that is too big.
Here are 3 of my favorite tips:
- Add a fitted blazer and button it to make the dress look like a skirt
- Layer your dress with a t-shirt, sweater or cardigan and add a belt to give it more shape
- If the dress is just slightly big like mine, then wear it as is and enjoy the extra room 🙂

How easy was that?!
