Hey Afaconados!
My Innovators of Timeless Style series is almost at an end and I have to say that I’m very excited about today’s entry. This article is dedicated to Audrey Hepburn, eternal style icon.
Audrey Hepburn in her own words: “I never think of myself as an icon. What is in other people’s minds is not in my mind. I just do my thing”.
And “do her thing” she absolutely did. Where do I begin?! Audrey Hepburn could have never known the affect she would have on fashion for years to come when she donned a very simple, yet chic black dress by Givenchy in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. A dress, mind you, that sold at auction for over $900,000, the highest price ever paid for a dress in a film. Because of this dress, the “Little Black Dress” has become a wardrobe necessity and you would be hard pressed to find a woman’s closet without one in it.
To Audrey Hepburn, style was incidental. She simply wore what she liked and knew very well what worked best for her figure. At 5’7 inches tall and a mere 103 pounds, her thin frame, elfin features and graceful posture as a former ballet dancer would all play a part in how remarkably elegant she looked in her clothes. It seems unreal to me that a woman so beautiful was often quoted as saying that she never thought of herself as pretty.
Audrey Hepburn and Hubert de Givenchy were good friends. She trusted his eye for fashion and he was inspired by her. The designer not only created her looks in movies like Sabrina and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but he also designed for her personal wardrobe as well. The best thing about Audrey Hepburn’s style is that it’s absolutely attainable. Because of her simplistic elegance, the pieces she wore which included basic black sheath dresses, turtlenecks, capris and white shirts are fit for every budget and body type. In her time, being taller wasn’t necessarily a good thing for film, so she made flats and ballet slippers an integral part of her wardrobe. Audrey Hepburn was quoted as saying that jewelry did not suit her, so her accessory selections were not generally heavy statement pieces. Here’s a style flashback:
Simplistic elegance at its best!
