I figured that since the Marilyn Monroe movie sparked the idea to have an “Innovators of Timeless Style” series, it would only be fitting to kick it off with her.
Famous Marilyn Monroe Quote: “I’m very definitely a woman and I enjoy it”
In an era when women were expected to leave a little to the imagination, Marilyn Monroe was determined to push the envelope. She certainly wasn’t alone in this effort, however, as other very notable seductresses like Bette Paige and Brigitte Bardot were there with her. And she didn’t start the trend of wearing curve hugging designs either. She just perfected it. She had that extra thing that is so hard to come by. She oozed sensuality, but she did it in a way that wasn’t entirely offensive. It actually became an expectation of her and has been said to have led to her demise.
I think the best way to characterize Marilyn’s style is by using one word…”Unapologetic”. She embraced her figure and was not ashamed at all to show it off. Everything she wore, whether it was a low cut, form fitting gown or a pair of capris pants with a turtleneck, was an opportunity for her to flaunt her famous hourglass figure. The voluptuous bombshell was regularly sewn into her dresses for red carpet appearances to ensure that every inch of fabric hugged her curves perfectly.
For those of you who want to achieve Marilyn’s look, it’s not easy to do. You have to be unapologetic about flaunting your curves and you have to exude the confidence necessary to pull it off. Marilyn’s signature style consisted of pencil skirts with matching shrunken sweaters, halter neck dresses, strapless dresses with sweetheart or plunging necklines and a white fur wrap to add a special touch of glamour. It has been said that Marilyn was not a fan of bright colors although red was a favorite of hers. She also preferred to wear Beige, Black, Cream and White. Here’s a flashback of her signature style:
Absolutely unapologetic and fabulous!
