Hey Afaconados!
As you may or may not know, New York Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2013 will be over soon. I know I probably should be reporting on all of the fabulous designs that will be available for next year, but literally every single fashion website you go to will be reporting on that same thing. My job is to prepare you for what’s right around the corner…and that’s Fall. The temperatures are steadily dropping and before you know it, it’ll be time to pack away the summer clothes and bring out the boots and sweaters.
Although my one bedroom condo is a decent size for furniture, the builders didn’t leave much room for closet space. If your living space is anything like mine, you know it takes quite a bit of creativity when it comes to packing up the summer clothes. My goal for today is to give you a few tips for hibernating your clothing during the colder months.
1. Begin By Cleansing Your Closet – Before you start the process of packing, take a good look at the clothing you’re pulling out. If there are items you haven’t worn throughout the summer, consider donating them to charity. This way you’re saving space before you even start packing. 2. Take A Second Look At Your Summer Clothes – Ask yourself if there are items of clothing that can be layered or worn with warmer items of clothing so you don’t have to pack them away (i.e. Tanks, Camisoles, Skirts that can be worn with tights).
3. Wash/Dry Clean What You Plan To Pack – Now that you know which items you want to keep out and which ones you want to pack away, take the time to wash or dry clean the items you plan to pack. This should be obvious as you shouldn’t want to pack away dirty clothing. If you have a Wash ‘N’ Fold in your area, I highly recommend that you take the clothes you plan to pack there. They charge based on how much your bag of clothing weighs (it’s never a whole lot) AND they fold them for you which will save you tons of time when it comes to packing.
4. Invest In Space Saver Bags – These things are AMAZING! I swear if I could be one of those people on the commercial that does a testimonial I would! With these protective bags, you can pack away till your heart is content and then when you’re done, you seal them and use your vacuum to suck out the air which completely flattens the bag and your clothing. I can’t tell you how much space they save me. The Space Bag 8 Piece Super Value Pack is currently sold on Amazon.com for $18 and it includes: 1 Jumbo bag, 2 Extra Large bags, 4 Large bags and 3 Medium bags. That’s an excellent value for how many times you’ll get to use them. I bought mine 5 years ago when I bought my condo and haven’t had to buy new ones yet! Trust me, get these!
5. Purchase A Large Plastic Container – Chances are that even if you’re in a condo or studio, you have room somewhere (hopefully) to store a container of some sort. True Statement: I keep my plastic bin in the washroom in my condo. After you’ve flattened your clothes using the space bags, you can simply stack them neatly in a large plastic container of some sort. I got mine from Walmart for $50….not quite sure now but I think mine is the Sterilite 35-Gallon Latch Tote. You’ll have to go to the store and see which size works best for you.
And there you have it! Packing your summer clothes doesn’t have to be so much of a pain if you have a systematic way of doing it. I hope these tips help alleviate some of your summer packing woes. 🙂
How do you guys normally get ready ready for Fall?
Until next time!
